LIVE UPDATE from our #BigCatPhotoSafari to Sabi Sand, South Africa.
By Specialist Photographic Guides Lance van de Vyver and Villiers Steyn.
Yesterday afternoon, we were joined by 8 new guests. After lunch and a briefing, we headed out on drive. We soon found female leopard tracks and caught up with Thandi. She had just killed and hoisted a duiker into a Marula Tree. She was still panting.
We spent the rest of the drive with her as she plucked fur from the carcass and began feeding on its hind quarters. We hoped she would jump out the tree but she never did. The sun set and turned the sky into a palette of beautiful colours.
This morning we headed straight back to Thandi. She had not eaten much and was sitting below the tree grooming. A hyena arrived and chased her up a different marula tree nearby. We photographed her as she sat in the second tree. She eventually descended and headed back towards the tree with the kill in it.
We painstakingly waited for her to jump back into the tree (we waited for more than an hour). She eventually did and we managed to get some fantastic images of the moment, as she climbed the near vertical 4 meter high trunk of the Marula tree. Patience pays off. With Djuma’s traverse, we were able to stay put and never leave the sighting.
We then stopped at the Nkuhuma lionesses (without any cubs) and one Avoca Male lion. They were flat and did not provide much from a photographic perspective. We then made our way back to the lodge for brunch.
