FROM TREVOR MCCALL-PEAT & VILLIERS STEYN
Yesterday evening we headed out with the intention of searching for leopards. We made our way to Twin Dams and soon found tracks for a female leopard. We followed these to Treehouse dam where we then found tracks for a male and female leopard. We looked around but were unable to find any of the cats. Mvula had been seen North West in the morning and we headed in that direction to see if we could find him.
We had an amazing sighting of elephants drinking at Sydney’s dam during the sunset. It was a stunning scene. We then heard that Mvula had been found and quickly headed in that direction. We managed to find him and get a few great shots of him moving down the road and doing walk-bys. We headed back to the lodge for a brilliant braai/barbecue on our last night with our first group of guests.
This morning we heard that Tingana had been seen at the dam in front of the lodge at about 4am. We decided to search the area. We heard that another guide had briefly seen a leopard very close by and we decided to assist in the search.
After a few minutes of tracking we found Xongile moving through some very dense bush. She was very skittish and soon perched herself on a termite mound to survey the area around her. We had a lovely but brief sighting of her. Suddenly Xongile bolted and Tingana burst onto the scene, actively searching for Xongile’s scent. We followed him through the dense vegetation as he zig zagged around.
We then spotted another leopard on a termite mound. It was Thandi. She was watching everything going on from her high vantage point. She then jumped down and began to follow Tingana in the road. The two stopped occasionally to mate. This was a first for many of our guests and they soaked up the experience.
We lost the leopards in the dense vegetation and headed out of the area. We found fresh tracks for the Nkuhuma pride of lions but came up empty handed. We the. drove back to camp for our final breakfast with our first group of guests before they head home. It has been a spectacular 5 days. We are currently preparing for the next group of guests to arrive and are excited for the next 5 days ahead.
