FROM VILLIERS STEYN & JOSHUA MCPHAIL
Yesterday we headed out with the idea of going to Big Dam to photograph some hippo at sunset. However, the bush had its own plans for us. On our way to Big Dam, we got a call over the radio that a leopard was found not too far from camp. We were happy to find out it was Kuchava, a young female we had not seen yet. She was in some thick grass moving about. She spotted a scrub hare and stalked it close to us. When she pounced, the hare ran straight towards us and under our vehicle and Kuchava stopped right next to us. Amazing! It was great to see a leopard who we saw on our very first Big Cat Safari when she was still a cub, some 2 years ago.
They then started heading towards a watering hole and we tried to anticipate them drinking but they decided to walk straight past the water and lie in the shade of a tree. We spent a few more minutes with them before heading back to the lodge for breakfast and photographic training with our guests. This afternoon we will head out into the bush on our next photographic adventure of this safari.
