LIVE UPDATE from our #BigCatPhotoSafari to Sabi Sand, South Africa.
By Specialist Photographic Guides Villiers Steyn & Lance van de Vyver.
It was a very hot day yesterday so we decided to start our drive by checking waterholes. We had an amazing sighting of some rhinos mud bathing. The one bull was completely on his back and rolling around whilst some hippos splashed in the pool nearby.
We then headed north to where some lions were seen and on the way, we had a cute sighting of some baby crested francolin chicks with their mother. We got some images of them as they foraged.
Arriving at the lion sighting we found two Avoca male lions with another younger male lion who we could not identify. They were lying flat in the grass and we decided to leave them and try for a female lion who was nearby. We found her where she was lying up against a dam wall which provided great opportunities for eye level images.
The female moved onto the dam wall and we then used our spot lights to create side and back light opportunities- everyone took some fantastic images. To top off a great sighting, the female began to roar and our guests sat silently and enjoyed the amazing experience before we headed back to camp for dinner.
This morning we headed out in search of leopards. We found some very fresh female leopard tracks and began tracking in earnest. We then bumped into the Nkuhuma lion pride lazing next to a small pool. We photographed them before they went flat and then continued our search for leopards.
Unfortunately, after a very long search, we came up empty handed. However, the female tracks were joined by male tracks and we think there could potentially be some mating happening. Our hard work this morning will hopefully pay off this afternoon.
